RECOMMENDED FAMILY HOLIDAYS IN POITOU CHARENTES, FRANCE
Lies on the Atlantic coast between the chateaux of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards. It is one of the sunniest parts of French coast with 2,250 hours of sunshine per year making it a good family holiday destination from early Spring to late Autumn - it is our favourite region for the kids and we visit with our two every year, so Poitou Charente is a region that I know well.
The family attractions in Poitou Charente in the south west of France are numerous making it an ideal holiday destination that is easily accessible from the UK. This year we visited Puy du Fou that is on the north west edge and although we initially thought it expensive, we can't recommend it highly enough - it is a bit like a theme park without rides (I know that sounds odd). It is a series of "shows" or "extravaganzas" such as scenes from a castle seige with sword fighting and moving castle walls, viking ship attack with battles and burning towers, gladiators including lions and chariot racing etc - our kids loved it and next time we plan to spend 2 days there and stay overnight.
Also in Poitou Charente we can recommend Futuroscope with its series of 3D and 4D films and rides. Ile de Re is a beautiful island off the west coast of Poitou Charente with stunning beaches and watersports. Ile d’Aix is ideal for cycling with the youngsters - it is a traffic free island and you can hire bikes to cycle all around the edge - in the most northern spot is a lovely secluded beach, ideal for a picnic. La Rochelle aquarium is famous in the region but we enjoy a lazy lunch on the harbour whilst the children look at the numerous boats.
