In a sleepy hamlet, an hour inland from lovely beaches and the bustling port of La Rochelle, the two gites are in rolling countryside with lovely views down the valley. The stream in the bottom is actually the tiny beginnings of the Vendee river. An hour in the opposite direction brings you to the ancient city of Poitiers and Futuroscope. The nearest town is L’Absie (3 Km) which has bakers, grocers, chemist, bars, newsagent and banks. Puy du Fou (stunning day out) is 40 minutes away and the children’s amusement park at Mervent is just over the hill. It is also an ideal area for walkers, as the commune was chosen to have the Maison de la Randonnee for the region and some new walks have been mapped and marked out in honour of the new building. New for 2012! Snooker table added to the games in the barn!
There are two holiday gites - each comfortably sleeping a family of four - a large garden, a swimming pool, a games room with laundry facilities, table tennis & table football and a play area with slide, swings, balance beam and somersault bars. It is a quiet and peaceful rural setting, the perfect place to enjoy a slow breakfast on the patio, a lazy afternoon by the pool, or a relaxed bottle of wine under the stars. We have a bike storage area containing 7 bikes, from child’s to adult, which are free for you to borrow.
The pool is cleaned by plants and so there are no chemicals or salt in the water (good news for those with allergies). Inflatables, racquets, balls, frisbees, quoits and kites are provided. The playground has a metre wide slide, swings, balance beam and somersault bars. Indoors there are books and jigsaws, DVDs and CDs, soft toys in the children’s rooms.
The kitchens have dishwashers and each gîte has a high chair and stairgates/cots can be provided on request. ‘Au Marcassin’ sleeps 4 and ‘Au Cocorico’ sleeps 5.
Au Marcassin: This gite faces South (lounge and double bedroom) and West (dining area and twin bedroom). The patio is in the shade until late morning (sunbathe by the pool instead) but then stays sunny until dark. The accommodation consists of: Double bedroom, Twin bedroom, Bathroom with shower, L-shaped open plan area containing: fitted kitchen (including microwave), dining area and sitting area with TV & DVD player. Outside there is a small patio with 4 garden chairs, table, parasol
Au Cocorico: This gite faces East (kitchen and both bedrooms) and South (lounge and main bedroom). The patio gets the early morning sunshine and is sunny until mid afternoon. When it is in the shade you can always go and sit by the pool. The accommodation consists of: main bedroom with double & single bed, small bunk bedroom, bathroom with bath & shower, kitchen (with microwave), living/dining room with TV & DVD player. French doors open on to the patio with 5 garden chairs, table, parasol

An excellent two weeks, very relaxing rural holiday. Gite was excellent with plenty of space internally, outdoor dining area and bbq. Pool was fantastic to cool down after hot days. Visited Royan, Futuroscope and Puy De Fou for days out. Venise Vert also recommended. Fran is an excellent host, the evening with the neighbours and visit to farm was special. Fran Ashworth(owner) is a veteran Gite owner, providing a home from home feel to her Gites. She is very welcoming and helpful and the gite is comfortable, light and airy. The pool and swings are a great addition for those lazy days spent around the gite. The area is rural, quiet and beautiful. There's plenty to do in the area if you are happy to drive 1-2 hours. Puy de Fou (Theme Park) and Tranche sur mer (beach) are definitely worth a visit. We would consider returning. Rating 4 out of 5, Deb, Jul 2011.

Fantastic holiday gite comfortable and clean and very well equipped. Surroundings were perfect for relaxing. Freshwater pool was a hit with the children. The property was clean, well equipped and well maintained and set in a very beautiful and peaceful location. Wow! Swimming in a freshwater pool, complete with lily pads and a tumbling waterfall under blue skies, against a backdrop of green and golden rolling hills ,seems like a dream now I'm back to reality in England! What a fabulous place to relax, recharge and bask in Fran's hospitality.Very comfortable and stylish gite and loads to do, all within a reasonable driving distance. Brain-rottingly hot in Deux Sevres this year - high 30's much of the time - so the lovely pool was a godsend. The gite was well kitted out and comfortable, and the area has loads of stuff to go and see: historic medieval towns like Poitiers, Niort, and Parthenay; 17th century Rochefort; the bonkers Puy Du Fou (take water and a hat); and the calm of the Marais Poitevin and the lovely Japanese Garden at Maulevrier, to name but a very few that I actually had time to see.Fran is a great hostess who puts herself out to make you feel at home.
