SKI RESORT FACTS
Family Skiing Holiday in Samoens, French Alps:
A beautiful village in France's Giffre valley, Samoens lies at the foot of the Criou mountain, and is one of the more challenging of the five Grand Massif mountain range resorts, with stunning views and virtually no queues. Samoëns has grown and expanded recently but still retains plenty of old-school French charm. Known chiefly for its stonemasons, this listed village boasts medieval fountains, rustic old buildings and an ancient church.
Resort altitude: 720m, Highest lift: 2,500m, no summer skiing
Total pistes 265km - 53 Beginners, 51 pistes intermediates, 14 pistes advanced, 15 nursery areas
Weekly lift pass: €204, free for children under 5, reduced for children up to 16
Family Skiing Holiday in Morzine-Avoriaz, French Alps
Chamonix-style valley town plugged into one of Europe's largest linked ski areas - Portes du Soleil. For our money, Morzine is the best base from which to explore the enormous Portes du Soleil area. It combines the bustle of a busy, vibrant town with some of the finest skiing in Europe, and as such is hugely popular with British skiers. Even better, it is extremely picturesque, thanks to a lovely location along the dramatic River Dranse, and its northerly location (only an hour or so from Geneva) makes it great for short transfers and self-drive trips. Perhaps the only drawback is the size of the place. As it follows a valley, Morzine's perpetual growth means that if you're staying at the far end of town you'll probably have to catch a bus to get to the lifts.
Resort altitude: 1,000m, Highest lift: 2,466m, no summer skiing
Total pistes 650km - 112 Beginners, 104 pistes intermediates, 28 pistes advanced, 2 nursery areas
Weekly lift pass: €205, free for children under 5, reduced for children up to 16
Family Skiing Holiday in Chamonix: French Alps
Arguably the best (expert) ski resort in the world, with epic off-piste and awe-inspiring scenery. If only we had a helicopter to commute between the mountains. Chamonix is a large yet attractive town incorporating several satellite villages along a 12km-long glacial valley. It has a long mountaineering history thanks to its location at the base of Mont Blanc and its bars buzz with happy, modern-day mountain-lovers from 1600 onwards. Yes, there's a Chanel shop but don't expect glamour - locals and regular visitors wear climbing harnesses and carry ABS rucksacks, and there's accommodation and dining to suit all budgets.
Resort altitude: 1,035m, Highest lift: 3,842m, no summer skiing
Total pistes 155km - 36 Beginners, 31 pistes intermediates, 14 pistes advanced, 4 nursery areas
Weekly lift pass: €200 - €240, free for children under 4, reduced for children up to 16
Family Skiing Holiday in Sainte Foy: French Alps
The perennial bridesmaid to the Espace Killy bride, Sainte Foy deserves the 'best kept secret in the Alps' tag. Situated 12km from Val d'Isere, Sainte Foy Tarentaise is the ideal resort for experienced skiers and beginners alike. It's relatively quiet, without much nightlife, so it is great for families and groups who are looking for a bit of escapism. Probably due to the lack of clubs and bars this is a less populated resort, which means relatively short waits for lifts and plenty of room on the slopes
Resort altitude: 1,550m, Highest lift: 2,620m, no summer skiing
Total pistes 25km - 4 Beginners, 8 pistes intermediates, 3 pistes advanced, 2 nursery areas
Weekly lift pass: €135.00, free for children under 7, reduced for children up to 13.
Family Skiing Holiday in Saint Lary: French Pyrenees
One of the main resorts in the Pyrenees, St-Lary-Soulan is a traditional village with stone buildings. The cable car in the village whisks skiers up to the pistes which starts at 1700m and there are 100km of pistes in total.
Resort altitude: 830m, Highest lift: 2,515m, no summer skiing
Total pistes 100km - 7 Beginners, 26 pistes intermediates, 23 pistes advanced, ? nursery areas
Weekly lift pass: €153-€170, free for children under 5, reduced for children up to 12
Family Skiing Holiday in the Vosges Mountains, Gerardmer Skiing, Loraine
In the winter months the Vosges Mountains belong to the skiers, snowboarders and Nordic walkers. 90 ski lifts service 120 downhill alpine ski runs. The main ski stations are at Gerardmer, La Bresse, St Maurice-sur-Moselle, Bussang, Ventron, Le Valtin and Xonrupt Longemer. Ski schools and equipment hire are easily available. The Vosges is also popular with cross country skiers, offering over 300km of signposted runs.
Gerardmer Resort altitude: 666m, Highest lift: 1,150m, no summer skiing
Total pistes 40km - 7 Beginners, 4 pistes intermediates, 9 pistes advanced
Weekly lift pass: €94-€126, free for children under 5, reduced for children up to 14
