Self catering cottage in the grounds of a Chateau, Montpinchon, Normandy

Property Summary (FR029)

Three luxury self catering holiday cottages or gites in the grounds of a Normandy chateau - Voici, Voila & Votre are three cottages in the grounds ofthe Napoleon III chateau and have views of the Chateau's twin turrets. They have been created from a row of pretty 18 th century stone cottages and stables.

The cottages are set in three acres of parkland just outside of the cathedral city of Coutances just 15 mins away, but the village of Montpinchon is just a few minutes away while a huge hypermarket is just ten minutes away. Lovely sandy beaches are just twenty minutes away.Top tourist sights like Bayeux and the D Day beaches are 45 minutes away, while Mont St Michel is just over an hour away. The ferry ports of Caen and Cherbourg are both just over an hour away. Ask about discounts with Brittany Ferries. Eurotunnel is around 4 hours away on very good roads - break your journey at the pretty port of Honfleur.

The cottages (gites) blend old world charm with 21 st century comfort. Original beams and exposed stone work collide harmoniously with innovative touches and styling from today. The cottages have TVs with UK channels (including children's channels), a DVD player, video player and CD. The three gites have use of a well equipped laundry room with washing machine and dryer

Voici (sleeps 4 in 2 beds) is a two bedroomed gite with two bathrooms (one ensuite), a large lounge and a great dining kitchen. The ensuite bedroom has a double bed (140cm) and the other room has oversized twin sleigh  beds (110cm and 120cm wide). The cottage sleeps four people plus the odd child in a cot or put-u-up bed. Many families put a fold up bed in the twin room, although it does leave it a little on the cosy side (not that kids seem to mind!). There is family bathroom on the ground floor, so the kids can be popped straight in the bath after playtime. Being an old cottage, the staircase is steeper than you might be used to. There is a stairguard at the top. Right outside is a picnic and BBQ area plus plenty of parking.

Voila (sleeps an extra 4 people but must be booked with Voici) not big enough for your party? Well, at certain times of the year you can also hire Voila, which is right next door. Please note that Voila is not available to rent on its own. Voila has a large bedroom with a huge 160cm wide bed. There is also a large ensuite shower room, study area , lounge and a small kitchen. Voila is like a little hotel suite and is ideal if your party includes grandparents or another couple, who want to be near to you but have a little extra privacy.  There is a small sofa bed in the lounge of Voila

Votre (sleeps 4 in 2 beds) A two bedroom gite with a large open plan reception area with four sets of double French doors. There is a well fitted kitchen, dining area and lounge. Downstairs is a bathroom with a shower over the bath. Upstairs is a good sized double bedroom and a small twin room. There is also a toilet with wash basin upstairs. Votre has a sprial staircase which some children may find difficult to use. There is no stair guard at the bottom.

Users of the gites get to enjoy the three acres of parkland that the gites and the Chateau are set in, including the swimming pool. There is a huge play marquee filled with toys aimed at 3 - 8 year old. It has a soft flooring with loads of Fisher Price an Tomy toys plus sand pit, bikes, scooters and a huge inflatable ball to climb into (5ft diamtre).Search out the woodland den area where odler children can let their imagination run riot with lots of planks and braches to create their own special places. Also, check out swings, the 5.5 metre diametre swimming pool (above ground)  and picnic areas. Opposite Le Castel is a farm with children, who are often happy to play with your youngsters.

If you wish to have a break from cooking, then evening meals are available in the Chateau that also offers family en suite bedrooms with Bed and Breakfast.

Holiday Reviews from the Owners’ site

A stunningly decorated yet child-friendly Napoleon III château. A contradiction? Jon Barnsley and Nicholas Hobbs have achieved it with elegant family accommodation and children’s suppers, leaving parents free to enjoy their house-party dinners.

We Did not want to go home! We did not know really what to expect - maybe the children would have to be seen and not heard. This expectation could not have been further from reality. Jon and the staff were very accommodating and kind to the children and to us harassed parents providing DVDs and children's satellite channels and a HUGE garden so that we could get on with being adults again, eating, drinking & reading while the children were safe and happy. It is a beautiful and comfortable place to stay and seems to attract very interesting guests. House party is definitely how it feels and we really would like to return. We loved it. Theo, Jersey, Stayed August 2009

My family and I stayed for three nights in April. We had intended to stay for a couple of nights and drive on, but the whole family loved it so much we extended our stay. The Chateau is simply the most gorgeous chateau-like house to stay in that we saw. Everything from the llama that greets you as you drive in, to Jon's hospitality to the gourmet evening meals he cooks are superb. I can't recommend it enough. Nick - San Francisco, stayed April 2009

I stayed with my husband and our one year old and four year old. We chose the Chateau as we specifically wanted to hire a gite attached to a small Hotel/B&B where we could have Dinner in the Hotel having tucked the children up in bed. It worked like a dream. Jon is incredibly welcoming and helpful. We had dinner at the hotel on two evenings and wished we'd done it every night! The house is really beautiful and the whole experience was elegant and lots of fun. The food was fabulous, it managed to satisfy both my vegetarian needs and my husbands carnivorous desires. We particularly enjoyed the shared dining experience. ( i.e. everyone staying at the hotel sits around the same table to eat, which could be hideous but works brilliantly: a sort of pot luck dinner party with Jon as a very accomplished host/ringmaster.) The gite itself was perfect for us, very chic interior with everything we needed. Child friendly often means wipe clean and ugly but not in this case. Both bedrooms are beautiful and really comfortable. (such a lovely surprise to find two gorgeous huge sleigh beds in the children's room instead of the usual poky bunk beds.) From travel cots and stair gates to thoughtful touches like pretty children's bowls and cups and proper blackout blinds (an absolute must for children's bedrooms!) My husband would say that I am a very fussy control freak (i.e. female) so for me to say that the Chateau was perfect for us is high praise indeed. We very much enjoyed our time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. We will definitely be returning. Mrs M, Cambridge,
